The African Elephant (Loxodonta africana), the largest land mammal on earth, also makes one of the best subjects for wildlife photography. I have taken thousands of elephant photos and I never tire of it. Below are a few of what I feel are my best elephant images that I have taken in different African Safari locations, including South Africa and Zimbabwe, I hope you enjoy my free elephant photo gallery. Elephant Photography

Pretty much all of my best pictures of elephants have come about after sitting and watching elephants at a distance as to not disturb their natural behavior. It is then that the elephant acts normally and with plenty of patience (which is a must for any sort of wildlife photography) you can get some excellent photographs. Elephant photography is in many ways probably one of the easiest forms of wildlife photography, mostly because of their size:

Size makes a Difference in Wildlife Photography

Because of the size of elephants you do not have to have a massive zoom to fill the frame, in fact in many of my best photos of elephants, I am not even using a zoom. Another advantage is that because elephants are so big, as long as you approach them in a sensible manner (with a trained safari guide) they are generally not afraid of humans and so you can often spend hours in the company of a whole herd of elephants, giving you time to take the best photographs.

All my photos of elephants were taken using either the Canon PowerShot Pro90 IS or my newer Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 which for me has to be the best digital camera for safari, travel and wildlife photography. check out my guide to the best digital cameras for safari and travel.
