The Safari Guide to hiring a car in Namibia.
Namibia makes a good self drive holiday destination as the roads are generally good and even though many are of a gravel surface, most places are reachable in a normal sedan vehicle. There are some more remote areas, such as Kaokoland and Bushmanland, that will require four wheel drive vehicles (4x4).
I think that the general advice is to rent the largest and most comfortable car you can afford as driving on gravel roads can become fairly tiring especially on long trips and the stability and ground clearance offered by larger vehicles does make things safer and easier.
Tips & Advice
Where to Hire & Who From
I have found that it is often cheaper to rent a car from Windhoek, this is because most car hire companies are based in Windhoek and hiring from other locations in Namibia often includes hidden delivery fees.
Shop around, it is worth it as prices vary depending on the amount of vehicles in each class that companies have available. I have included an number of links to companies that offer car rental in Namibia below to make it easier for you to compare prices.
Driving & the Weather
If you plan on visiting Namibia during the wet season (from Nov - April) and plan on hiring a car, take into account that the heavy rains can make some roads impassible for sedan & smaller vehicles - if you are traveling during this period you should seriously consider renting a 4x4.
Plan your route, many visitors underestimate the distances and times it takes to travel, Namibia is a big country and whist many of the main roads are good, you cannot compare them to the A1.
Air-conditioning could be a good idea, especially if you are visiting Namibia in the summer, this will not only make you feel more comfortable, but also less tired, especially on longer journeys.
