Nikon SHE Safari Monarch 10x36 Womens Binoculars Introduction

Technically there is no difference between a pair of 'normal' binoculars and womens binoculars. Where there is a difference is in the styling.

Most binoculars have a rather masculine look to them, but Nikon in collaboration with SHE Outdoor Apparel have come together and designed a pair of binoculars with more of a feminine touch that is just ideal for most outdoor adventures including taking on safari.

Nikon Monarch ATB Binoculars

Under the feminine safari styling lies a pair of the excellent Nikon Monarch 10x36 DCF binoculars, which means that there is far more to these optics than just styling.

The Safari Guide Opinion

The advantage of a compact binocular over a full-size version is that they are easier to carry and travel with. The biggest compromise is in the brightness of the image produced which is more noticeable in poor light conditions. This is where a mid-size binocular comes into their own, easier to carry and travel with than a full-size binocular and with better poor light performance than a compact binocular.

10x36 binoculars like these Nikon Monarch SHE's have an Exit Pupil of 3.6mm and a Twilight Factor of 19, both of which point to the fact that while they may not be the best in poor light conditions, they are also far from the worst.

It is important to remember that these figures do not take into account the quality of the prisms, lenses and their coatings. Features like their phase coated Bak-4 prisms and fully multi-coated lenses will mean that they outperform cheaper optics of the same configuration and probably even beat cheap binoculars, with lower quality prisms and lens coatings with larger 42mm objective lenses.

The brown coloured rubber armor that covers the Nikon SHE Safari Monarch 10x36 Binoculars have a number of benefits that you may not have thought of:

  • It provides a comfortable gripping surface for making them easier to hold on to
  • It helps protect the binocular from the bumps and scratches that come with day-to-day use
  • It's easy to wipe clean after a tough day in the field
  • It dampens down any noise from bumping them that could frighten away skittish birds and other wildlife as I often do with my wedding ring!

The dimensions (122x129mm /4.8x5.0in) of the Nikon 10x36 SHE binocular compares pretty well with most other mid-size roof prism binoculars that I have reviewed.

Their weight of 19.9 ounces (575g) is also very lightweight: For comparison the top of the range Swarovski 10x32 EL Binoculars weigh 21.5ozs (610g).

Waterproof & Fogproof

They are O-ring Sealed meaning that this Nikon SHE Safari 10x36 ATB Binocular is fully waterproof.

They have also been "nitrogen purged", which means that the air inside the binocular has been replaced with nitrogen gas, this prevents the interior optical surfaces from fogging up due to rapid temperature changes or in areas that have high humidity.

To focus the binoculars, you use the central wheel on the binocular that adjusts both binocular barrels at the same time.

The diopter adjustment is located on the right eyepiece and is used to correctly set up the binoculars for your own eyesight by adjusting for differences in your eyes.

The Eye Cups

These have good quality multi-position twist-up eyecups. Non-eyeglass wearers will use the eyecups in the fully extended position. For those that wear glasses, there is a good 15mm of eye relief which should be more than enough for most people.

Optical Performance

Lens & Prism Coatings
All the lenses and prisms are multilayer-coated, which means that they have fully Multi-coated Lenses that increase light transmission with multiple anti-reflective coatings on all air-to-glass surfaces.

The 10x36 Nikon SHE also comes equipped with quality Phase Correction Coated BaK-4 roof prisms which means that they are made of superior optical glass that will help in ensuring you get a high-contrast and sharp picture over the full field of view.

The phase correction coatings on the prism glass is an expensive process that is done to keep light in correct color phases, this produces brighter images and higher edge-to-edge sharpness.

The close focusing distance is an excellent 2.5m (8.2 feet) beating many of the most expensive mid-size binoculars on the market.

The apparent field of view for the Nikon SHE Safari 10x36 ATB Binocular is a decent 105m at 1000m / 314 feet/1000 yards but does fall a little short of the very best like the Swarovski EL 10x32 Binoculars (360ft at 1000 yards).

Also Included

The binocular comes with a great looking and excellent quality leather and canvas shoulder bag in khaki with chocolate brown trim, that has multifunctional pockets and a built-in optics case with plenty of room to store your binoculars as well as a few other goodies making it perfect for travel on safari or day trips. As a point of interest, when sold separately the bag retails for around $80.

Also included is the very cool and high quality embossed leather binocular strap in a chocolate brown colour.

Not only do these binoculars look great, but they perform really well and in my opinion make the ideal stylish safari binocular for women. Taking into account the quality of the optics and the included accessories and considering that the Nikon SHE Safari Monarch 10×36 Binocular is available for around £200/$300, they also make very good value for money.
